Clips Drafted, Privacy Chosen by You: An OpenAI dots Plugin for TikTok Posting

OpenAI's launch example reads like a brief for an OpenAI dots plugin for TikTok posting: when a new interview transcript arrives, the dot "identifies moments for clips, prepares show notes, and drafts social posts for your approval." The words that matter are the last three. TikTok asks more of a post than any other network in the AdaptlyPost API, and three of its settings are choices a dot has no way to make on your behalf.

The short version: add the AdaptlyPost MCP server as a custom plugin in ChatGPT developer mode, sign in with OAuth, and confirm the dot sees your TikTok account with a read call. Then tell it to ask you for privacyLevel and aiGenerated on every post, start on SELF_ONLY with sendAsDraft: true, and read list_post_results after each publish.

Can an OpenAI dot publish to TikTok on ChatGPT Pro?

An OpenAI dot on ChatGPT Pro has no documented way to publish to TikTok through a custom plugin, because OpenAI's August 2026 help article on MCP in ChatGPT limits Pro to "read/fetch permissions in developer mode" and reserves full MCP for Business and Enterprise/Edu. Sending a video to TikTok is a write, and so is sending it to your TikTok drafts. On Pro, the dot lists your TikTok connection and reads results.

The other open question is whether a dot uses developer-mode plugins at all. As of 29 September 2026 OpenAI's dots docs say a dot "can use supported plugins installed and enabled for your account" and do not define "supported". Dots are available to Pro users outside the EEA, the UK and Switzerland and to Business Premium users in all supported ChatGPT regions. Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare get a beta once a workspace admin turns it on.

Which TikTok fields does the dot fill, and which do you?

TikTokPostConfig in the AdaptlyPost API carries twelve keys, and two are required: connectionId and privacyLevel. The dot reads connectionId from list_accounts. privacyLevel takes PUBLIC_TO_EVERYONE, MUTUAL_FOLLOW_FRIENDS, FOLLOWER_OF_CREATOR or SELF_ONLY, with no default, and nothing in a transcript tells a dot which one you meant.

TikTok is the only network in AdaptlyPost with both title and caption in its config, separate from the shared text. TikTok also has no alt text field, so mediaAltTexts does nothing there.

What do I tell my dot about TikTok?

Pair the prompt with Custom Rules. A dot has four settings: take action without asking, take action when you say so or if pre-approved, ask before taking action, and hand off to you. Set "ask before taking action" for AdaptlyPost writes. OpenAI's docs say "asking your dot to draft replies doesn't give it permission to send them", and the prompt makes that explicit for TikTok.

Why does aiGenerated matter more when a dot made the clip?

aiGenerated matters more when a dot picked the moment, cut the clip or wrote the words, because the dot's own involvement is what the flag discloses. A dot has no way to know whether a brand deal is behind a clip either, and brandedContent and brandedContentOwnBrand split TikTok's paid-partnership disclosure by whose brand it is. Put all three in the per-post question, not in a default.

How does the video get from the dot to AdaptlyPost?

The video gets to AdaptlyPost through upload_media, which takes a public URL or base64 data and returns the mediaUrls that create_post accepts. create_post rejects anything else with "Media file(s) not found in storage", so a link the dot found on the web does not count as uploaded.

This is the least documented step on the dot side. OpenAI says each dot has its own cloud computer where it can "browse, analyze information, create files, and run tools", and it has not documented how a dot passes a file from that computer into a plugin call as of 29 September 2026. AdaptlyPost also has an open_upload_widget tool that shows an upload box in ChatGPT, and whether that box appears inside a dot conversation is also undocumented. Test with a five-second clip on SELF_ONLY before you build a workflow on it.

Can a dot keep a TikTok cadence running?

A dot keeps a TikTok cadence running through its own recurring tasks, and that is the only agent-side option, because AdaptlyPost recurrence cannot be combined with TikTok. OpenAI describes recurring tasks as saved schedules, and also documents event triggers "when a connected service supports event monitoring". OpenAI has not listed which connected services support event monitoring as of 29 September 2026, so a trigger such as "a new file in a Drive folder" is something to test.

Where does the AdaptlyPost credential go for TikTok?

The AdaptlyPost credential goes through the plugin's OAuth sign-in, never into a message. OpenAI's safety post says a secret in a readable message or document is still visible to the model, and its safety FAQ says password protections do not cover passwords shared in a chat or through a plugin. The AdaptlyPost MCP server answers an unauthenticated request with a 401 and a WWW-Authenticate header, so ChatGPT opens the sign-in page itself.

The sign-in also carries a role. The AdaptlyPost MCP server acts under the signed-in member's workspace role, and a Contributor "creates and edits own drafts; cannot schedule or publish." A Contributor sign-in keeps every TikTok post in AdaptlyPost drafts until an Editor or Admin publishes it.

What breaks on TikTok specifically?

A missing privacyLevel breaks first, and on the dot's draft path it breaks late. saveAsDraft defers validation until publish_draft, so a draft without privacyLevel looks fine in the list and fails at the moment you approve it. Ask the dot to show the full tiktokConfigs with every draft, as the prompt above does.

The second failure is a success that is not one. When TikTok's daily active-user cap is hit, TikTok puts the content in your TikTok inbox as a draft instead of publishing it, and AdaptlyPost marks that result with tiktokDraftFallback. A dot that reports only "published" misses it, so make it report the flag.

The third is the title and caption swap. A caption written into title hits the 90-character limit and fails validation. After any fix, retry_failed_platforms with TIKTOK resends only TikTok, with the same content, so correct the post before you retry.

One more belongs to the dot. A dot creates its own memories and you cannot view or edit them, so "use SELF_ONLY for now" said once in chat becomes a preference you cannot check. Keep it in the task text.
