TL;DR, Quick Answer

7 min read

YouTube recommends custom thumbnails of 3840 x 2160 pixels for videos and 2160 x 3840 for Shorts, with a minimum width of 640 pixels for videos and a minimum height of 640 pixels for Shorts. Files must be JPG or PNG and stay under 2 MB when uploaded from a phone or 50 MB from a computer. Custom thumbnails need a verified account, Shorts thumbnails can only be added in YouTube Studio on a computer, and every channel has a daily custom thumbnail limit.

What is the correct YouTube thumbnail size?

The correct YouTube thumbnail size is 3840 x 2160 pixels for a regular video and 2160 x 3840 pixels for a Short, the two resolutions YouTube recommends in its Help Center article "Add custom thumbnails on YouTube." The same article sets a minimum width of 640 pixels for videos and a minimum height of 640 pixels for Shorts. Design at 3840 x 2160, export as JPG or PNG, and upload from a computer if the file is larger than 2 MB.

YouTube's full list of thumbnail rules, from that Help Center page and the YouTube Data API reference:

RuleWhat YouTube states
Video thumbnail resolution3840 x 2160 pixels
Shorts thumbnail resolution2160 x 3840 pixels
Minimum size640 pixels wide for videos, 640 pixels tall for Shorts
Aspect ratio16:9 for videos, 9:16 for Shorts, 1:1 for podcast playlists
Formats"image formats such as JPG or PNG"
File size from a phone2 MB for video thumbnails, 10 MB for podcasts
File size from a computer50 MB for video, Shorts and podcast thumbnails
File size through the API50 MB, as image/jpeg, image/png or application/octet-stream

YouTube's advice is to go big: "Your custom thumbnail image should be as large as possible. It will be used as the preview image in the embedded player."

Is 1280 x 720 still a valid YouTube thumbnail size?

Yes, 1280 x 720 is still a valid YouTube thumbnail size, because it is 16:9 and wider than the 640 pixel minimum, but it is no longer the size YouTube recommends. The current Help Center text names 3840 x 2160 for videos. A 1280 x 720 file uploads and displays; it simply carries a third of the width YouTube asks for, which shows on large screens and in the embedded player.

The minimum 16:9 thumbnail is 640 x 360. That is our arithmetic from the 640 pixel width floor and the 16:9 ratio, not a pair YouTube prints. Anything below 640 pixels wide fails the minimum.

What size is a YouTube Shorts thumbnail?

A YouTube Shorts thumbnail is 2160 x 3840 pixels at a 9:16 aspect ratio, with a minimum height of 640 pixels. YouTube adds a restriction that matters to anyone scheduling Shorts: "Custom thumbnails for Shorts are currently only available to add in YouTube Studio on a computer." The phone app and the mobile Studio app cannot set one.

YouTube also warns about the wrong shape on vertical video: "Vertical videos with 16:9 custom thumbnails will be replaced by an auto-generated 4:5 thumbnail on the home, explore, and subscription pages." The 16:9 image still shows on the watch feed, in watch history and on non-mobile platforms, but the home, explore and subscription pages show YouTube's own 4:5 frame instead. Match the thumbnail shape to the video shape.

The Short itself has its own length and format rules, covered in how long a YouTube Short can be.

What file size limit applies to YouTube thumbnails?

The file size limit for a YouTube thumbnail depends on the device: 2 MB from a phone and 50 MB from a computer, according to YouTube's Help Center. Podcast thumbnails get 10 MB on mobile. The YouTube Data API's thumbnails.set method matches the desktop figure with a 50MB maximum.

The 2 MB mobile cap is the one that catches people. A 3840 x 2160 PNG with photographic content lands well above 2 MB, so upload 4K thumbnails from a computer, or save them as JPG at a quality setting that keeps the file under 2 MB when a phone is the only option.

Who can upload a custom YouTube thumbnail?

Only a verified YouTube account can upload a custom thumbnail; unverified channels can pick from YouTube's auto-generated suggestions. The Help Center puts it in the first paragraph: "You can choose from auto generated suggested options, or upload your own if your account is verified." The Shorts note repeats it: "Your account must be verified to use this feature."

Verification is only the first gate. YouTube also enforces a daily ceiling: "There's a limit to how many custom thumbnails a channel can upload each day. If you get an error saying 'Daily custom thumbnail limit reached' when trying to upload a thumbnail, try again in 24 hours." YouTube publishes no number for that limit and says it varies "by country/region or channel history," with Community Guidelines strikes lowering it. Through the API, the same situation returns uploadRateLimitExceeded with HTTP 429 and the message "The channel has uploaded too many thumbnails recently."

Thumbnails also follow the Community Guidelines. YouTube lists nudity, hate speech, violence and harmful or dangerous content as grounds for rejection and a strike, and says repeat offenses can remove custom thumbnail privileges for 30 days.

What can stop a custom thumbnail upload
1
Verify the account. Unverified channels only get YouTube's auto-generated suggestions.
2
Stay under the daily limit. YouTube publishes no number, only a "Daily custom thumbnail limit reached" error once you hit it.
3
Follow the Community Guidelines. Nudity, hate speech, violence and harmful content trigger a rejection and a strike.
4
Avoid repeat offenses. Repeat offenses can remove custom thumbnail privileges for 30 days or end in account termination.
Each gate sits above the last: a verified account, then the daily cap, then a clean Community Guidelines record.

How do you set a YouTube thumbnail through the API?

You set a YouTube thumbnail through the API by calling thumbnails.set with the video's videoId and the image as the request body, after the video exists. Google's estimate for the quota cost is 50 units per call, on top of the upload itself; the YouTube API quota extension post explains how that daily budget works. The method returns forbidden (403) when the user lacks permission to upload custom thumbnails, and invalidImage (400) when the file is not a usable image.

The API reference does not say whether thumbnails.set works on Shorts. The Help Center's statement that Shorts thumbnails are added only in YouTube Studio on a computer is the only guidance YouTube gives, so treat Shorts thumbnails as a manual step.

How do you schedule a YouTube video with a custom thumbnail?

AdaptlyPost lets you upload a custom thumbnail for each long-form video you schedule in its YouTube video scheduler, and the thumbnail is set when the video publishes. The thumbnail picker lets you slide through the video and use a frame, or upload your own image, and you set the title, description, tags, category and privacy in the same form. You can also generate thumbnail artwork with the AI Image Studio. AdaptlyPost's public API takes a thumbnail too: send thumbnailUrl with the video post, or give YouTube its own image in platformThumbnails. YouTube takes an image there, not a video frame.

A working order for a scheduled upload:

  1. Design the thumbnail at 3840 x 2160, keeping text large enough to read at small sizes.
  2. Export as JPG or PNG. Stay under 2 MB if anyone on the team uploads from a phone.
  3. Confirm the channel is verified, or the custom thumbnail option is not available.
  4. Upload the video in AdaptlyPost, attach the thumbnail, and write the title and YouTube description.
  5. Pick the publish time and schedule it.

For Shorts, add the thumbnail afterwards in YouTube Studio on a computer. The rest of the Shorts workflow is in how to schedule YouTube Shorts.

Frequently asked questions

What size should a YouTube thumbnail be in 2026?

A YouTube thumbnail should be 3840 x 2160 pixels at 16:9 for a regular video, the resolution YouTube recommends in its Help Center. Shorts thumbnails should be 2160 x 3840 at 9:16. The minimum is 640 pixels wide for videos.

What is the maximum file size for a YouTube thumbnail?

The maximum file size is 50 MB when you upload from a computer and 2 MB when you upload from a phone. Podcast thumbnails get 10 MB on mobile. The YouTube Data API's thumbnails.set method also caps files at 50MB.

Why can't I upload a custom thumbnail on YouTube?

The account is not verified, the channel hit its daily custom thumbnail limit, or custom thumbnail privileges were removed after a Community Guidelines strike. YouTube only allows custom thumbnails on verified accounts. After a "Daily custom thumbnail limit reached" error, try again in 24 hours.

Can I add a custom thumbnail to a YouTube Short?

Yes, but only in YouTube Studio on a computer, and only on a verified account. YouTube recommends 2160 x 3840 pixels at 9:16 for Shorts thumbnails. A 16:9 thumbnail on a vertical video is replaced by an auto-generated 4:5 thumbnail on the home, explore and subscription pages.

Is 1280 x 720 good enough for a YouTube thumbnail?

1280 x 720 meets YouTube's rules because it is 16:9 and above the 640 pixel minimum width. It is not YouTube's current recommendation, which is 3840 x 2160. Use the larger size when you can, since YouTube also uses the thumbnail as the embedded player preview.

What formats does YouTube accept for thumbnails?

YouTube's Help Center names JPG and PNG. The YouTube Data API accepts image/jpeg, image/png and application/octet-stream for thumbnails.set. Export as JPG when you need a smaller file for a mobile upload.

What thumbnail size does YouTube recommend for podcasts?

Podcast playlist thumbnails follow a 1:1 aspect ratio, YouTube's only square exception to the 16:9 and 9:16 rules for videos and Shorts. The file size limit for podcast thumbnails is 10 MB from a phone, higher than the 2 MB video limit, and 50 MB from a computer like every other thumbnail type.

What happens if a YouTube thumbnail breaks the Community Guidelines?

YouTube can reject the thumbnail and issue a strike when it shows nudity, hate speech, violence, or other harmful or dangerous content. Repeat offenses can remove the channel's custom thumbnail privileges for 30 days or lead to account termination. You can appeal a strike, and if the appeal is approved and you have not replaced the thumbnail, YouTube may restore it.

Can I set a YouTube thumbnail through AdaptlyPost's public API?

Yes. Send thumbnailUrl with the video post, or add a YouTube entry to platformThumbnails to give YouTube a different image from the other networks. YouTube takes an image there, not a video frame, and AdaptlyPost sets it when the video publishes.

Does setting a YouTube thumbnail through the API cost extra quota?

Google's API reference lists a quota cost of 50 units for setting a thumbnail through thumbnails.set. Quota belongs to the Google Cloud project, not the channel: the default is 10,000 units a day for most endpoints, with videos.insert counted separately at 100 calls a day. Google also says every request, including an invalid one, costs at least 1 unit.
