Running an OpenAI dots plugin for LinkedIn posting pays off as a weekly drafting job, because a dot works 24/7 and a LinkedIn post still needs a person to sign it off. The dot wakes on a schedule, reads what you shipped, drafts one post in AdaptlyPost and waits. You approve it, and only then does it publish. Everything in this post is about making that loop hold.

Can an OpenAI dot post to LinkedIn on ChatGPT Pro?

An OpenAI dot on ChatGPT Pro has no documented way to publish to LinkedIn through a custom plugin, because OpenAI's August 2026 help article on MCP in ChatGPT limits Pro to "read/fetch permissions in developer mode" and reserves full MCP for Business and Enterprise/Edu. Creating a LinkedIn post, even as a draft, is a write. On Pro, the dot lists your LinkedIn connections and reads results, and stops there.

A second question sits under the first. As of 29 September 2026 the dots docs say a dot "can use supported plugins installed and enabled for your account", and OpenAI has not said whether a developer-mode plugin counts. AdaptlyPost is not in the ChatGPT plugin directory, so the only route is the custom MCP server at https://mcp.adaptlypost.com/mcp. What does a LinkedIn post need in the AdaptlyPost API?

A LinkedIn post in AdaptlyPost needs platforms: ["LINKEDIN"], a contentType, the text, and the connection id in linkedinConnectionIds, which list_accounts returns. What should a dot's weekly LinkedIn task say?

A dot's weekly LinkedIn task names the source it reads, the draft it saves and the approval it waits for, all in one saved schedule. OpenAI describes recurring tasks as saved schedules the dot wakes up for, and names Gmail, Google Drive, GitHub and Slack among the apps a dot works with. Point the task at whichever of those holds your week.

Step 2 is the line people leave out. A weekly task with no exit clause invents a post on a quiet week, and an invented post on LinkedIn lands in front of people you work with.

Step 6 is where the dot's own rules come in. Custom Rules have four settings: take action without asking, take action when you say so or if pre-approved, ask before taking action, and hand off to you. Set "ask before taking action" for AdaptlyPost writes. OpenAI's launch example is a dot that "drafts social posts for your approval", and its docs say "asking your dot to draft replies doesn't give it permission to send them."

Should I use a dot's recurring task or AdaptlyPost recurrence?

Use the dot's recurring task when every LinkedIn post needs new text and your approval, and use AdaptlyPost recurrence only for a post that genuinely repeats. The two look alike and behave differently.

The spintax rule is the LinkedIn-specific catch. The AdaptlyPost MCP server's own tool description says X and LinkedIn reject identical text, so a recurring LinkedIn series with plain text fails from the second occurrence on.

Can a dot make a LinkedIn document post?

The dot side is less settled. OpenAI says each dot has its own cloud computer where it can "create files, and run tools", so a dot builds a slide PDF without trouble. Getting that file into AdaptlyPost is the open question: create_post only accepts mediaUrls from upload_media, which takes a public URL or base64 data, and OpenAI has not documented how a dot passes a file from its computer into a plugin call as of 29 September 2026. Does a dot learn my LinkedIn voice?

A dot learns from feedback over time, according to OpenAI, and it keeps memories from ChatGPT plus memories it creates, including from connected apps. You cannot view or edit an individual dot memory, and deleting the dot is the only way to clear them. That is a problem for tone rules you care about.

Keep the rules you care about in the task text, where you can read and change them. "No hashtags" in step 3 of the task is visible every week. "No hashtags" said once in feedback becomes a memory you cannot inspect, and you will not know whether it held until a post goes out with three of them.

Where does the AdaptlyPost credential go for LinkedIn?

The AdaptlyPost credential goes through the plugin's OAuth sign-in and never into a message to your dot. OpenAI's safety post says a secret in a readable message or document is still visible to the model, and its safety FAQ says password protections do not cover passwords shared in a chat or through a plugin. The AdaptlyPost MCP server answers an unauthenticated request with a 401 and a WWW-Authenticate header, so ChatGPT opens the sign-in page itself.

The sign-in also sets a hard limit. The AdaptlyPost MCP server acts under the signed-in member's workspace role, and a Contributor "creates and edits own drafts; cannot schedule or publish." Sign the plugin in with a Contributor account and the dot cannot publish a LinkedIn post even if its Custom Rules slip; an Editor or Admin publishes the draft.

What breaks on LinkedIn specifically?

LinkedIn breaks at the account level, not the field level. An expired LinkedIn connection returns an auth error when the post publishes, and because saveAsDraft defers validation until publish_draft, the dot's draft looks fine all week and fails on Tuesday morning. Ask the task to call list_accounts first and stop if the LinkedIn connection is not active.

The second failure publishes successfully to the wrong place. A personal profile and a Company Page both appear in list_accounts as separate LinkedIn connections, and the ids do not say which is which. list_post_results returns the accountName per platform, which is the only place a post that went to your profile instead of the Page shows up. Make the dot read that name back after every publish.

The third is a timing error. A draft saved with "08:00" and no offset in scheduledAt publishes at 08:00 UTC, because AdaptlyPost stores the timezone field for display only. Keep "with my UTC offset" in step 4 of the task so every weekly draft carries it.
