Twenty minutes in the app: how long can Instagram reels beTwenty minutes in the app: how long can Instagram reels be

TL;DR, Quick Answer

7 min read

Instagram's Help Centre says you can record and edit reels up to 20 minutes long in the app. Meta's API, which scheduling tools use, caps a reel at 15 minutes and sets a 3 second minimum. Reels over 3 minutes are not recommended to new audiences, and a reel you want to boost has to be 90 seconds or less in a full-screen 9:16 frame.

How long can Instagram reels be?

Meta's answer to how long can Instagram reels be is 20 minutes for a reel recorded or uploaded in the Instagram app, and 15 minutes for a reel published through Meta's Instagram API. The app figure sits in the Help Centre article "Record a reel on Instagram," which reads: "You can record and edit videos up to 20 minutes with Instagram Reels." The API figure sits in the IG User Media reference, under Reel Specifications: "Duration: 15 mins maximum, 3 seconds minimum."

The Help Centre repeats the app limit in a section titled "How long your reel can be": "You can record one or multiple clips that add up to 20 minutes. The progress bar at the top shows how long you've recorded." The iPhone, Android and computer versions of that article give the same 20 minute figure.

Right under it, Meta adds the line that matters more for reach: "Reels over 3 minutes won't be recommended to new audiences."

So one reel has four length numbers attached to it, depending on what you want the reel to do.

Why do reels over 3 minutes reach fewer people?

Reels over 3 minutes reach fewer people because Instagram does not recommend them to new audiences, so a 3 minute 1 second reel loses the recommendation route to people who don't follow you. Meta states the rule in one sentence and does not say which surfaces count as recommendations or whether the rule changes for professional accounts. Meta gives no exception in writing.

The practical effect is a split in how you plan length. A reel built to find new viewers has a hard budget of 3 minutes. A reel built for people who already follow you, such as a full tutorial, a recorded talk or a long product walkthrough, can use the full 20 minutes and accept that Instagram will not recommend it to new audiences.

If a long piece has a strong opening, cut a version of 3 minutes or less for discovery and post the full cut separately. The short cut does the recruiting and the long cut serves the people it recruited.

Format choice is a separate decision from length. For when a reel is the right container at all, compared with a feed post or a story, see our breakdown of Instagram post vs story vs reel.

A creator holding a phone upright to record a vertical video, matching the section on why the app and the API allow different reel lengths.

Why does the API stop at 15 minutes when the app allows 20?

The Instagram API stops at 15 minutes because Meta's developer reference still lists "15 mins maximum" for reels, and that reference is separate from the Help Centre that announced 20 minutes for the app. Meta has not published a note that reconciles the two numbers, so each one governs its own route.

This matters for anyone who schedules. Third-party scheduling tools publish to Instagram through the API, which means a reel between 15 and 20 minutes long can be posted by hand in the app and cannot be published through a scheduler. If your edit lands at 17 minutes, either trim it to 15 or post it from your phone.

The API has more rules than length. It caps reel files at 300MB, accepts only MOV or MP4, and sets codec, frame rate and aspect ratio requirements, each with its own failure mode. All of that is covered in our guide to every limit the Instagram Reels API puts on your video. This page stays on length.

Is there a minimum length for an Instagram reel?

The minimum length for an Instagram reel published through the API is 3 seconds, and Meta publishes no minimum for reels made in the app. The 3 second floor comes from the same line as the 15 minute ceiling: "Duration: 15 mins maximum, 3 seconds minimum."

A 2.5 second loop is a normal asset on other networks and a rejected container on Instagram's API. If you schedule short loops, pad them to at least 3 seconds before you upload. The Help Centre articles on recording reels give no floor, so a very short reel posted in the app is outside what Meta documents either way.

Stories follow a different rule on the same API page. A story video is "60 seconds maximum, 3 seconds minimum," so a 90 second clip that works as a reel does not work as a story through the API.

How long can a reel be if you want to boost it?

A reel you want to boost has to be 90 seconds or less and fill a full-screen 9:16 vertical frame. Meta lists the requirements in the Help Centre article "Boost an Instagram Reel": "Reels must be 90 seconds or less and have a full-screen (9:16) vertical format."

The same list adds three more conditions that trip people up:

  • "Reels can't use licensed music." Meta points to royalty-free music from its Sound Collection or original audio instead.
  • "Reels that have already been shared to Facebook can't be boosted."
  • The reel media "can't contain face or camera effects, GIFs, product tags, interactive stickers or camera filters from a third party."

If you plan to turn a reel into an ad later, cut it to 90 seconds in 9:16 from the start, so the version on your profile is the version you can boost.

A person planning a content schedule at a desk with a notebook and laptop, illustrating how to work backwards from goal to reel length.

How do you pick the right length for a reel?

Pick the length by working backwards from where the reel has to go and what it has to do. This order settles it:

  1. Decide who the reel is for. If it has to reach people who don't follow you, keep it at 3 minutes or less. If it is for existing followers, you have up to 20 minutes.
  2. Decide whether you will boost it. If yes, cut it to 90 seconds or less in a 9:16 frame, with no licensed music.
  3. Decide how it will be published. If a scheduling tool will post it, keep it between 3 seconds and 15 minutes, because the API enforces both ends.
  4. Check the frame before the length. A 9:16 vertical frame works for every row in the table above. The pixel side of that is covered in our guide to vertical video dimensions.
  5. Post anything between 15 and 20 minutes from the app. No API route accepts it.

Treat the strictest limit that applies as the real one. A reel meant for discovery and for a later boost has a 90 second budget, even though the app allows 20 minutes.

How does AdaptlyPost handle Instagram reel length?

AdaptlyPost schedules Instagram Reels up to 15 minutes long with audio and publishes them directly to a connected Instagram professional account, which matches Meta's API ceiling. Through the AdaptlyPost API, a reel is a VIDEO post with instagramConfigs.postType set to REEL, in mp4 or quicktime, between 3 seconds and 15 minutes. You queue reels next to feed posts, carousels and stories in the Instagram scheduling tool, and the scheduling steps themselves are covered in how to schedule Instagram reels.

Bulk scheduling has its own range for video: each file becomes one post, in MP4, MOV or WebM, up to 1GB, between 3 seconds and 5 minutes. A batch of short reels fits that range. A 12 minute reel goes in through the regular composer instead.

The limits in this article belong to Instagram. A scheduler decides when a reel goes out, and Instagram decides how long it can be.

Frequently asked questions

Can Instagram reels be 20 minutes long?

Yes. Instagram's Help Centre says "You can record and edit videos up to 20 minutes with Instagram Reels," and the limit is the same on iPhone, Android and the computer. That 20 minute figure applies to reels made in the Instagram app, not to reels published through Meta's API.

Why can't I schedule a 20 minute reel?

Scheduling tools publish through Meta's Instagram API, and Meta's developer reference caps reels at 15 minutes. A reel between 15 and 20 minutes has to be posted from the Instagram app. Trim it to 15 minutes if you want it on a schedule.

No, not past 3 minutes. Meta's Help Centre states that "Reels over 3 minutes won't be recommended to new audiences." A longer reel still reaches your followers, so keep discovery content at 3 minutes or less.

What is the shortest reel Instagram accepts?

Through the API, 3 seconds. Meta's reference reads "Duration: 15 mins maximum, 3 seconds minimum." The Help Centre publishes no minimum for reels created in the app.

How long can a boosted Instagram reel be?

90 seconds or less. Meta's boosting requirements say a reel "must be 90 seconds or less and have a full-screen (9:16) vertical format," and it also cannot use licensed music. A reel already shared to Facebook cannot be boosted.

How long can an Instagram reel be in AdaptlyPost?

AdaptlyPost schedules Instagram Reels up to 15 minutes long with audio, and its API accepts reels from 3 seconds to 15 minutes in mp4 or quicktime. Bulk scheduling accepts videos from 3 seconds to 5 minutes, up to 1GB each. Reels longer than 15 minutes have to be posted from the Instagram app.

How long can an Instagram story video be through the API?

A story video can be 60 seconds at most and 3 seconds at least. Meta's reference reads "60 seconds maximum, 3 seconds minimum." A 90 second clip that works as a reel does not work as a story.

Can I boost a reel that uses licensed music?

Not through Meta's boosting rules. The Help Centre says "Reels can't use licensed music" and points to royalty-free music from its Sound Collection or original audio. A reel already shared to Facebook can't be boosted either.

What file size and format does the Instagram Reels API accept?

The API caps reel files at 300MB and accepts only MOV or MP4. It also sets codec, frame rate and aspect ratio requirements, each with its own failure mode.

Can I bulk schedule a 12 minute Instagram reel?

Bulk scheduling in AdaptlyPost takes videos between 3 seconds and 5 minutes, in MP4, MOV or WebM, up to 1GB each. A 12 minute reel is outside that range, so you add it through the regular composer, which publishes reels up to 15 minutes.
