Announce completed Linear issues
The Linear integration turns the work you ship into social media posts. You connect your Linear account, then add announcement rules. A rule watches one Linear team. When an issue in that team is completed, AdaptlyPost writes a post about it for the accounts you picked, and saves it as a draft or schedules it.
What you need
- An AdaptlyPost workspace on a plan that covers posting.
- At least one connected Facebook, Threads, X, Bluesky, LinkedIn, Mastodon, Telegram or Google Business Profile account. Rules post text only, so platforms that need an image or video, such as Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and Pinterest, are not offered.
- A Linear account that can see the team you want to announce. Any Linear member can connect. You don't need to be a Linear admin.
- A workspace role that allows what the rule does. See Who can do what below.
Connect Linear
- In AdaptlyPost, open Integrations and select the Linear tab.
- Click Connect Linear.
- AdaptlyPost sends you to Linear. Choose your Linear workspace and approve access. AdaptlyPost asks for read access only, so it can list your teams and labels and read the issues you complete. It never changes anything in Linear.
- Back in AdaptlyPost, the card shows Connected as your Linear name.
The connection belongs to you, not to the workspace. It follows you into every AdaptlyPost workspace you are a member of, and every member who adds or edits a rule connects their own Linear account.
Add an announcement rule
On the Linear tab, click Add rule and fill in the form.
- Linear team. Pick the team whose completed issues should be announced. Under Label, keep Any label or pick one label to announce only the issues that carry it.
- Accounts. Pick up to 20 accounts that get each announcement.
- When an issue is completed. Pick Create a draft to have someone review and publish the post, or Schedule it to publish after a delay. The delay is between 5 minutes and 7 days, counted from the moment the issue was completed.
- Post content. Pick Template to write the text yourself, or AI caption to have AI write it from the issue.
- Click Add rule.
A workspace can have up to 20 rules.
Template variables
A template is your own text, up to 2,000 characters. Type { in the template, or click a chip under Insert:, to add a variable. AdaptlyPost fills it in from the issue.
| Variable | Filled with |
|---|---|
{title} | The issue's title |
{description} | The issue's description, without Markdown formatting, shortened to fit each platform |
{identifier} | The issue's ID, such as ENG-123 |
{team} | The Linear team's name |
{label} | The label the rule watches. Empty when the rule has no label |
A new rule starts with this template:
{title}
{description}AI captions
With AI caption, AdaptlyPost writes a caption for each platform from the issue's title and description. Under Instructions for the AI (optional) you can add up to 1,000 characters of guidance, such as "Friendly tone, explain what changed for users, no hashtags".
AI captions use 1 AI credit per platform for every completed issue. The credits come from the member who owns the rule.
What happens when an issue is completed
When an issue in the rule's team moves to a completed state in Linear, and carries the rule's label if it has one, AdaptlyPost:
- Writes the post from the template or with AI.
- Creates it for the rule's accounts, as a draft or scheduled after the delay.
- Lists the issue under Recent issues on the rule, with a link to the post.
Each issue is announced once per rule. Reopening an issue and completing it again does not create a second post, and editing an issue that is already done does nothing. Issues completed before you added the rule are not announced. Canceled issues are not announced either.
The post goes through the same checks as a post you create in AdaptlyPost. If a check fails, the issue shows as Failed under Recent issues, with the reason.
Manage rules
Each rule card shows its team, label, accounts, post mode and caption type, and when it last created a post. From the card menu you can:
- Edit the rule
- Pause it, so completed issues are ignored until you resume it
- Resume a paused rule
- Delete it. Posts it already created stay.
Click Recent issues to see the last issues the rule handled. Each one has a status: Posting, Draft created, Scheduled, Skipped or Failed, and Open post takes you to the post.
Who owns a rule
A rule runs as the member who last added, edited or resumed it. AdaptlyPost reads Linear through that member's connection, creates posts with that member's permissions, and charges AI credits to that member. Editing or resuming someone else's rule makes you its owner, and needs your own Linear connection with access to the team.
Who can do what
| Action | Roles |
|---|---|
| See rules and their recent issues | Every role |
| Add a rule, or edit your own, that creates drafts | Admin, Editor, Contributor |
| Add or edit a rule that schedules posts | Admin, Editor |
| Use AI captions | Admin, Editor, Contributor |
| Edit, pause, resume or delete another member's rule | Admin, Editor |
See Roles and permissions for the full list.
Disconnect Linear
On the Linear tab, click Disconnect on the Linear card. AdaptlyPost revokes its access and deletes the connection. Nothing changes in Linear. Rules that use your connection pause until you connect Linear again and resume them.
Troubleshooting
A paused rule shows why it was paused:
- The owner's Linear connection was removed or expired. The owner connects Linear again on the Linear tab and approves access in Linear. Then resume the rule.
- The owner can no longer post in this workspace. Edit or resume the rule to take it over.
- The workspace's plan doesn't cover posting. Renew the plan, then resume the rule.
- None of its accounts are connected anymore. Edit the rule and pick accounts.
- Three failed announcements in a row. Open Recent issues, read the error on the failed items, fix the cause, then resume the rule.
No teams appear when you add a rule. The Linear account you connected is not a member of any team. Ask a Linear admin to add it to a team, or disconnect and connect another account.
An account is missing from the list. Rules only post to Facebook, Threads, X, Bluesky, LinkedIn, Mastodon, Telegram and Google Business Profile. Accounts on other platforms are not listed.
A completed issue was not announced. Check that the rule is Active, that the issue is in the rule's team and carries its label, and that it was completed after you added the rule.
For anything else, write to contact@adaptlypost.com with your workspace name and the rule's team.
