Why the Instagram carousel limit is 20 in the app and 10 in the APIWhy the Instagram carousel limit is 20 in the app and 10 in the API

TL;DR, Quick Answer

7 min read

Instagram lets you put up to 20 photos and videos in one carousel when you post from the app, but Meta's Content Publishing API caps a carousel at 10, and every third-party scheduling tool publishes through that API. The caption on a carousel is capped at 2,200 characters, 30 hashtags and 20 @ tags, a carousel counts as one post against the daily publishing limit, and Reels cannot sit inside one.

Instagram's help centre sets the Instagram carousel limit at 20 photos and videos per post in the app, while Meta's Content Publishing API caps the same post at 10. The help centre line reads: "You can share a post with up to 20 photos and videos as a single post, also known as a carousel, to your Instagram feed." Meta's developer guide says: "Carousels are limited to 10 images, videos, or a mix of the two."

So the number depends on how a carousel post gets published. Post by hand in the app and you get 20. Publish through any tool that uses Meta's API, including every third-party scheduler, and you get 10. The rest of the carousel rules come from Meta's IG User Media reference, and most of them apply to the post as a whole rather than to each slide.

The caption, hashtag and tag caps are the same ones that govern single-image posts, covered in detail in our post on the 2,200-character caption and 20-tag rule.

Two separate Meta documents describe two separate ways into the same Instagram feed.

Why does the API stop at 10 when the app allows 20?

Meta's developer pages give no reason for the 10-item cap, and they do not mention the app's 20-item limit at all. The Content Publishing guide repeats 10 in three places: "To publish up to 10 images, videos, or a combination of the two", the children parameter described as "A comma separated list of up to 10 container IDs", and the Limitations bullet quoted above. The IG User Media reference adds a fourth: "Carousels can have up to 10 total images, vidoes, or a mix of the two," typo included.

None of those pages carries a note that the app allows more. A developer reading only Meta's docs would think 10 is the Instagram carousel limit everywhere, and a creator reading only the help centre would expect a scheduler to take 20. Both are reading correct pages. The two pages describe two different doors into the same feed.

If your carousel has 11 to 20 slides, it can only go out by hand from the Instagram app. Our guide to scheduling carousels on Instagram and Facebook compares the native and third-party routes side by side.

A person trims a folder of photos down to a smaller set before uploading it.

A scheduled carousel with more than 10 slides cannot publish, because the scheduling tool has to send every slide as a child container and Meta accepts no more than 10 children. Meta's docs state the cap and do not document the error code returned for an 11th child, so the exact error string is not something I can quote.

You have three workable options when a plan runs past 10:

  1. Cut the carousel to 10 slides. Merge two text slides into one or drop the weakest image.
  2. Split it into two carousels of up to 10 each, published as part one and part two.
  3. Publish the full 20-slide version by hand from the Instagram app and schedule the rest of the week's posts through your tool.

A related trap is the minimum. The two Meta pages quoted here give a maximum and no minimum item count, while Meta's Threads docs spell out "at least 2" for Threads carousels. A carousel with one item is a single post, and AdaptlyPost asks for at least 2.

Does a carousel count as one post against Instagram's publishing limit?

A carousel counts as one post against Instagram's publishing limit, however many items it holds. Meta's Content Publishing guide says so twice: "Carousels count as a single post" in the Rate Limit section, and "Publishing a carousel counts as a single post" in the carousel Limitations list.

The two sentences sit on the same page and disagree about the limit they belong to. The Rate Limit section says "Instagram accounts are limited to 100 API-published posts within a 24-hour moving period." The carousel Limitations list, a few paragraphs further down, says "Accounts are limited to 50 published posts within a 24-hour period." Meta enforces the limit at POST /<IG_ID>/media_publish. The reference page for GET /<IG_ID>/content_publishing_limit sides with the lower number, describing quota_total as "currently 50", so request fields=config,quota_usage and trust the quota_total your account gets back over either sentence. The Instagram content publishing limit post walks through the endpoint's response.

For batch planning the takeaway is the same either way. Ten images in one carousel cost one unit of quota, and ten single-image posts cost ten.

A hand holds a phone recording vertical video, the format carousels treat differently from single clips.

Reels cannot go inside an Instagram carousel. Meta's IG User Media reference lists "Reels cannot appear in carousels" among its Reels limitations, and tells developers to build carousel items as image or video containers "(reels are not supported)". The help centre adds the viewer's side of the same rule: "videos in carousels are not considered reels and will not show up in the Reels tab or have reels features."

Several other settings behave differently inside a carousel:

  • Caption. The caption goes on the carousel container. Meta marks the caption field "Not supported on images or videos in carousels."
  • Crop. Meta says "Carousel images are all cropped based on the first image in the carousel, with the default being a 1:1 aspect ratio." The help centre says the orientation you choose in the app "affects all of the photos or videos in your post."
  • Alt text. Alt text works on image items in a carousel and not on video items.
  • AI disclosure. The is_ai_generated flag is "Not available for carousel children."
  • Location. The app allows one location for the whole post, with people tags on each photo.
  • Editing. After sharing you can reorder or remove items, but "you can't add new photos or videos after you've shared the carousel."

Meta's reference does not publish a separate video duration or file size for carousel items. It gives specs for Reels and for Story video, and says nothing specific about video inside a carousel.

Instagram's API limit of 10 sits below Threads and TikTok and above Pinterest. Meta's Threads API says "Carousels must have at least 2 and no more than 20 total images, videos, or a mix of the two," so the Threads carousel maximum is double what the same company allows on Instagram through its API.

Where AdaptlyPost fits

AdaptlyPost publishes Instagram carousels of 2 to 10 items, the range Meta's API allows, and checks the count when you create the post. A carousel outside that range, a caption past 2,200 characters, or a carousel sent as a Story comes straight back as a 400 error and no post record is created. Video items must be MP4 or QuickTime and 3 to 90 seconds long. The Instagram posting API page lists every rule, and the Instagram scheduling tool queues carousels alongside feed posts, Reels and Stories. A carousel with 11 to 20 slides still has to go out from the Instagram app by hand.

Frequently asked questions

An Instagram carousel can have up to 20 photos and videos when you post it from the Instagram app. Through Meta's Content Publishing API, which scheduling tools use, the limit is 10 images, videos or a mix of the two. Plan for 10 if the post will be scheduled.

Why can't my scheduler post a 20-slide Instagram carousel?

Schedulers publish through Meta's Content Publishing API, and Meta caps a carousel there at 10 child containers. The 20-item limit applies only to carousels posted by hand in the Instagram app. Split the carousel into two posts or publish it natively.

Yes. Both the Instagram help centre and Meta's API docs allow photos and videos in the same carousel. Reels cannot be carousel items, and a video inside a carousel does not appear in the Reels tab.

Does a carousel count as one post on Instagram?

Yes. Meta states that "Carousels count as a single post" against the API publishing limit, so ten images in one carousel use one unit of quota. Meta's guide gives that limit as 100 posts per 24 hours in one section and 50 in another, so read quota_total from GET /<IG_ID>/content_publishing_limit for your account's figure.

The caption on a carousel is capped at 2,200 characters, 30 hashtags and 20 @ tags, the same limits as any feed post. The caption belongs to the carousel as a whole, and Meta does not support separate captions on individual items.

No. The Instagram help centre says you can reorder or remove items and edit the caption, location and tags after sharing, but you can't add new photos or videos. To add items, delete the post and publish a new carousel.

Meta's IG User Media reference calls for JPEG files up to 8 MB, with an aspect ratio between 4:5 and 1.91:1. It does not publish a separate size or duration spec for video items in a carousel, only for Reels and Stories.

Meta's IG User Media reference caps collaborators on a carousel post at 3 usernames. That limit is separate from the caption's 20 @ tags, which cover mentions written into the text.

Meta's Instagram documentation states a maximum of 10 items through the API and gives no minimum. AdaptlyPost sets its own floor at 2 items, treating a single-item carousel as just a single post.

Alt text works on image items in a carousel but not on video items. Meta's IG User Media reference caps it at 1,000 characters per item.
